A codec is an algorithm that compresses images for more efficient storage or distribution. The choice of codec depends on the type of project (editing, colour grading, distribution, archiving, etc.).
Available codecs on our system :
- DPX (10/16 bits)
 - TIFF (8/16 bits)
 - ADX
 - DNG
 - H.264
 - Apple ProRes (422 Proxy, LT, 422HQ, 4444, 4444 XQ)

Our recommendation : Apple ProRes 4444
At Kafard films, we mainly recommend ProRes 4444 for several reasons :
- Intra-frame compression : almost lossless quality
 - 4:4:4 sampling in 12 bits : excellent for colour grading
 - Wide compatibility : recognised by almost all professionale software
 - Reasonable file size compared to DPX

It offers the best compromise between quality, flexibility and data volume.
About DPX
DPX is an uncompressed format where each frame is stored individually. This make it deal for archiving or restoration, but it generates enormous volumes (up to 1.4 TB for 20 minutes in 4k !).
Proxy creation
For offline editing workflows, we offer lightweight versions called proxy, in ProRes 422 LT or Proxy format, generated in addition to the native rushes. After editing, the rushes will be conformed to the high-quality scans. This allows you to work with lighter files while maintaining quality for the final stages.
ProRes4444 vs DPX comparison
| Format | 20 min of 4K film (Super 16) | File per frame? | Compression | Total weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DPX 10 bits | ≈ 1,4 TB | Yes | None | Very heavy |
| ProRes 4444 | ≈ 210 GB | Non (1 video file) | Quasi-lossless | Reasonable |
